Kendal Rugby Club say their ‘thoughts are with family and friends’ after one child has died and another has been injured following a crash involving a car on a rugby pitch.
A car has collided with two children on a pitch in Kendal – killing one child and injuring another – on Shap Road, on 5 March 2025.
The driver of a black BMW i40, a man believed to be in his 40s, has been arrested by Cumbria Police on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
Officers were called to the incident just before 5pm. It’s reported that one of the children died at the scene and a second child is being treated by paramedics.
Dr Stephen Green, chairman of Kendal Rugby Club, says he is “deeply saddened” by the incident.
He said: “An incident occurred today at Kendal Rugby Club, resulting in a tragic loss of a child’s life. Our thoughts are with their family and friends and we kindly ask for privacy for all involved at this difficult time.
“We are cooperating fully with the authorities as they conduct their investigation – the club and all facilities are temporarily closed while this is carried out.”
Immediate family members of both children have been informed.Specialist investigators are at the scene and the area has been cordoned off as initial investigation enquiries take place.Police said they are treating this collision as an isolated incident and there is no suggestion at this time that this is terror-related.
A spokesperson for the North West Ambulance Service said: “Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of the child who sadly passed away following an incident in Kendal this afternoon.
“We attended the scene at Kendal Rugby Union Football Club, responding with two ambulances and several senior clinicians.”Anyone who witnessed the collision is asked to contact police by reporting online at www.cumbria.police.uk/report- it, quoting incident number 195 of 5 March.
