The chair of the 2027 Rugby World Cup says Victoria has a genuine chance of hosting the event’s finals, but will face fierce competition from other states.
Visit Victoria chief executive Brendan McClements said on Tuesday that hosting key matches over the 2027 Rugby World Cup, as well as this year’s NRL grand final, were a priority for Victoria as the state aims to maintain its status as the nation’s sporting capital.
Sir Rod Eddington, chairman for the Rugby World Cup, told The Age and Sydney Morning Herald on Wednesday: “There will be real competition for the finals, and Melbourne will be right in the centre of that. But I also expect that Sydney will put its best foot forward.
“What is clear is Melbourne will put its best foot forward because it always does, and has got a wonderful record for world-class events,” he said on the sidelines of the SportNXT conference.
