The anthems at the World Cup so far have been sang by choirs as the players voice their nation’s pride.

Fans have not taken these choir versions well and are demanding the competition changes its decision.

One fan wrote: “These carol singers leading the national anthems at the Rugby World Cup have absolutely butchered La Marseillaise and Ireland’s Call!

“Please make it stop!!”

“PLEASE PLEASE stop these versions and play the originals. It’s ruining any atmosphere!!”

A third added: “Stop with the kids choir stuff during the rugby World Cup national anthems.

“It’s ruining it! Play the music and let the players and fans sing it.”

Yet another said: “I think that, apart from the eventual winner, #RugbyWorldCup2023 is going to be remembered for how the national anthems have been absolutely butchered before the games.”

Others have compared the choir’s version of Ireland’s Call to an ‘Alive-O religion class’ and a ‘trailer for a horror movie’.

The same twist on the anthems was used for the tournament curtain raiser between France and New Zealand last night.

France recovered from a shaky start to put on a dominant display and come out winners by a score of 27-13.

It was a sure statement of things to come from the competition hosts and a sign of the difficulties Ireland will have to face later on in the tournament.

With the amount of backlash the anthems decision is getting it will be interesting to see
