I’m over the moon. It’s not really sunk in yet. Just so proud of the boys, so proud of everyone. Looked a bit shaky at one bit, but I think you saw the experience of our team shine through in that last ten minutes.

Hopefully we see a lot of our true self when we watch that one back. That was true testament to the work we’ve put in.

England player ratings

Earl produces his finest display to date while Tuilagi went missing for long stretches, writes Daniel Schofield.

Read our experts’ full player ratings here.

Steve Borthwick:

I thought the players were magnificent. The whole squad’s worked very very hard to get that result tonight.

You have to give immense credit to Fiji, they’ve played fantastically tonight and had a fantastic world cup.

England were in control. There was a spell midway through the second-half where they scored two back-to-back tries. They’re the only team in the world who can do it like they do.

A lot’s been written about this England team over this last period of time. What I see is a group of players who can rise to these occasions.

Respect shown between Earl and Botia

Fiji coach Simon Raiwalui

I’m a bit speechless at the moment but I couldn’t be prouder of the boys. We’ve worked so hard from week one. They’ve showed that we belong on the world stage. The whole group, 52 in total including the staff. It’s a bit of an emotional moment.

This is a different Fiji team and I think it’s just the start of something special. They wanted to created a different identity, and I think they’ve done that.

Owen Farrell:

It feels good at the minute. Glad to get the job done and I’m glad we had the fight did at the end against a top power outfit like Fiji.

We felt pretty calm. Obviously the skill and the power of Fiji can always hurt you at times, so you have to be on high alert.

I wish I didn’t give the penalty away at the end. It would have made things a bit easier, but the boys pulled through.

The forwards did a good job of giving us a good platform. We pulled the trigger as backs a bit early, we were caught a bit behind the gain line. Thankfully I was able to put it over.

ENGLAND WIN! 8src+6 min ENG 3src FIJ 24

Lawes gets over the ball, and there is a moment of confusion as to whether he is in a legal position. But Raynard blows up for a penalty – England have done it! It’s for a Fijian player going off his feet, but England won’t care how it happened. Fiji are momentarily incensed, and Farrell is forced to re-take his kick to touch, but after some shillyshallying, it’s all over. England are through to the World Cup semi-final.

It has been England’s best performance in a long while, and they are understandably ecstatic with the result. A tremendous fight back from Fiji, but England dug in, showing solid game management to take the points when on offer and battling to win the contest at the breakdown. Huge credit must go to stand out performances from England, most noticeably from Ben Earl who truly announced himself on the world stage in that game.

The final score in Marseille: England 3src – 24 Fiji.

8src+6 min ENG 3src FIJ 24

England disrupt at the line-out but Fiji retain the ball. They return to their narrow shape, looking to bludgeon through England’s forwards.

8src+5 min ENG 3src FIJ 24

The final call is that it’s just a penalty. Fiji kick to touch, but it only makes it to just inside the England half.

8src+3 min ENG 3src FIJ 24

Farrell is protesting his innocence in the background, but Nic Berry is now on the pitch asking whether it should be more than a penalty…

8src+3 min ENG 3src FIJ 24

It’s certainly deliberate, but it could yet be a yellow card…

8src+3 min ENG 3src FIJ 24

Fiji have been pushed back almost to half-way. The ball goes to ground and they fling a pass, which comes off the hand of Farrell. It looks like a deliberate knock-on though and is being checked by the TMO…

8src+2 min ENG 3src FIJ 24

Fiji fling it wide to the left, but there is no space there. They are being repelled backwards in the tackle and are now behind their 1src. Fiji look to spin it wide right, but it is well-read by Care who rushes up to make the tackle.

79 min ENG 3src FIJ 24

Fiji retain the ball and feed left to Nayacalevu. Fiji keep it narrow, crashing into England defenders just short of the England 22. All of Fiji’s players are within a 15 metre channel.

79 min ENG 3src FIJ 24

By the time the ball goes in, the clock will be in the red. This really is the final role of the dice for Fiji.

79 min ENG 3src FIJ 24

With a minute to go, Fiji win a scrum after an England knock-on. England get a shunt on but the scrum is re-set. Fiji now have one last shot at a World Cup semi-final.

76 min ENG 3src FIJ 24

Very nearly a great off-load from Fiji, but England intercept, flicking it to Ben Earl. Showing the presence of mind to find the space, and the turn of pace which so many Premiership defences fear – not the mention the stamina to run it out from his own 22 at this point in the game – the England flanker breaks through the defence, charging up-field. As he approaches the full back, he puts in a goose step but is just snagged. He crashes into the turf having run a good 5src metres.

With Fiji back-pedaling, England win a penalty at the breakdown and Farrell extends England’s lead to six points.

74 min ENG 27 FIJ 24

England have a scrum on their own 22. They must keep it stable her and exit well. Vunipola breaks from the base. Botia is lurking, looking to move in for the jackal, but Owen Farrell cuts him off. England clear to touch just short of their own 1src.

72 min ENG 27 FIJ 24

Fiji re-start well, forcing Courtney Lawes into touch as he catches. England are dogged at the maul though and repel Fiji backwards to win a penalty. Courtney Lawes is right at the heart of it.

ENGLAND DROP GOAL! 7src min ENG 27 FIJ 24

England have the bit between their teeth now, crashing forwards in waves of attack, first from Lawes and then through Earl. Tuilagi barrels into defenders before England go back right. Smith is collared, and England play away. With momentum slipping, Farrell shows brilliant game management to drop into the pocket and slot the drop goal. England go back ahead!

TRY FIJI! 67 min ENG 24 FIJ 24

Fiji are back in it. After a good defensive set from England, Fiji look on the back foot, but Radradra offloads expertly away through two tackles to release his team mate. With a one-on-one with Smith, Fiji play to Botitu who dives for the line.

Fiji add the extras, and the scores are all square!

67 min ENG 24 FIJ 17

Kurivoli’s kick cannons back off the post, but there’s still danger for England as Fiji gather. They appeal for a penalty as Courtney Lawes appears to catch it in the air.

65 min ENG 24 FIJ 17

England are at sixes and sevens all of a sudden. Ollie Chessum is batted off by Semi Radradra who flies full pelt into Marcus Smith. The England full-back stays down. As England scramble in defence, Courtney Lawes has one too many bites at the cherry in the breakdown, and  Fiji win a penalty.

TRY FIJI! 63 min ENG 24 FIJ 17

Powerful carry from Fiji, with Nayacalevu brashing through and over Farrell. They flick it wide right first, getting around the edge of England as Daly steps in. They then whisk it back out left to Nayacalevu, who is in acres of space. Johnny May does well to get a cross to make a tap tackle, but as Fiji recycle, Ravai cuts a line through a weak tackle from Itoje and crashes over the line to score.

Lomani adds the conversion.

England are penalised at the lineout for off-side – it looked like Sincler got in front of the ball carrier at the maul. Fiji send it down-field for a lineout just outside England’s 22.

6src min ENG 24 FIJ 1src

England then win a penalty at the scrum for Fiji wheeling. Replacement props Joe Marler and Kyle Sincler claiming the glory. Marler has a bit of fun with Tuilagi giving him a big shove.

6src min ENG 24 FIJ 1src

England’s imaculate defensive performance continues with another breakdown victory. This time it’s the good work of Danny Care in defence that opens up the opportunity for England to jackle. Borthwick’s side are taking on Fiji at their own game here, and they are coming out on top.

59 min ENG 24 FIJ 1src

Botia first drags Curry out the ruck by the leg before adopting a ‘put-em up’ boxing stance in the face of the incensed Curry. He catches the England flanker in the face with an open palm, but the referee rules that it’s all just handbags, and Fiji kick up-field for a lineout.

59 min ENG 24 FIJ 1src

After Fiji win a penalty at the breakdown, it kicks off all of a sudden. It looks as if Botia might have thrown a slap there at Curry…

58 min ENG 24 FIJ 1src

Dicing with the shot clock dead zone again, Farrell kicks but it falls short and Fiji look to run it out.

56 min ENG 24 FIJ 1src

Fiji thread together an intricate sequence of off-loads to get themselves into a threatening position on the left flank. Nayacalevu is knocked back by Farrell though and England then win another penalty at the breakdown. Kevin Sinfield will be grinning like a Cheshire Cat at his side’s performance so far. Farrell points for the sticks from wide out to the right.

56 min ENG 24 FIJ 1src

After Fiji kick, Smith looks to slither through but is collared by Botia. England kick up-field.

55 min ENG 24 FIJ 1src

Cries of “smash it” from Owen Farrell as Fiji set their maul. Sometimes rugby really is that simple…

54 min ENG 24 FIJ 1src

England are causing Fiji all sorts of problems with their kick chase. This time Farrell hoists one high into the air to put pressure on Droasese through Daly. After some refereeing debate, it is ruled to have come off the hand of Daly though and Fiji win the line-out.

53 min ENG 24 FIJ 1src

England play off the trop of the line-out and look dangerous. Genge is repelled though with a slightly static carry. England look to probe the blindside, but Smith is place in the unfortunate position of taking the ball with Botia’s shoulder flying right into his knee ligaments. Smith does his best to squirm out of the challenge, and England win a penalty for off-side. Farrell opts for the posts, and England add three more.

5src min ENG 21 FIJ 1src

The turnovers are starting to add up for England. This time it’s Itoje who disrupts at the line-out. With quick ball and playing under advantage, Farrell feeds Genge who barrels through Botitu. England chip in-behind and chase well, heaving Fiji into touch.

49 min ENG 21 FIJ 1src

Fiji bash into the guts of England’s defence once again through Nayacalevu, but Courtney Lawes gets over the ball this time to make a turnover in a crucial area of the pitch. Mitchell thumps the ball downs-field for a Fiji line-out around half-way.

49 min ENG 21 FIJ 1src

Offf the line-out, Fiji play right up to the line, whizzing it across the backline to the left flank. England scramble well, and Earl, who else, makes a good chop tackle to quell the momentum. As Fiji play back right, Curry makes a good read to intercept, but the ball goes to ground. Fiji scrum.

47 min ENG 21 FIJ 1src

Ben Early is getting through a mountain of work both in attack and defence, proving a nuisance at the breakdown and making powerful carries. After England work it up to the Fiji 22, Fiji win a turnover and kick back. Farrell lines up a 5src-22 but over cooks it. For an unfortunate ball woman, the Fijian winger doesn’t have time to slow down, careering over the barrier and using her as a speed bump.

45 min ENG 21 FIJ 1src

England have a good charge at the line through the forwards, but the maul is held up to give Fiji a scrum. Handbags ensue on the ground, with Ellis Genge accusing a Fijian of slapping him. But it is Genge who is penalised in the end for refusing to release the Fijian player’s shirt. Silly ill-discipline from England’s vice captain. Tempers are flaring a little early in this second half.

43 min ENG 21 FIJ 1src

There’s a tackle from Farrell on Radradra that looks border-line high, but the upstairs referee checks it and waives play on. Farrell then dribbles through a beautiful kick to the corner, but his is matched in expertise by the brilliant Radradra who flicks up a late off-load to his team-mate, and Fiji play out. In a breathless passage of play, England eventually win a penalty as Botia fails to show a clear release. England kick to the corner.

42 min ENG 21 FIJ 1src

Fiji gather at the line-out and wet a maul before carrying through Habosi. But Farrell stays high and rips it clean back.

On the turnover, Mitchell has all the time in the world to line up his kick but kicks too long, and FIji call the mark.

After Fiji knock it down field, Mitchell kicks too long again, giving Fiji a chance to counter. England will hope to tighten up in this area.

4src min ENG 21 FIJ 1src

We’re back under way. England gather the kick-off, and Mitchell returns serve with a high box kick. Fiji kick too long with their next effort and Mitchell calls the mark. He nudges to touch for a Fijian line-out on half way.

England getting the rub of the green

Just last week Seilala Mapusua, the Samoa head coach, was discussing the issue of subconscious bias against tier two nations and I am sure Fiji’s Simon Raiwalui will br bringing up a similar theme after the match. While wing Vinaya Habosi deserved his yellow card for a head-on-head collision with Marcus Smith, Tom Curry was incredibly fortunate to escape a similar sanction for a no-arms tackle on Josua Tusiova and also appeared to get away with an upright tackle. Then just before halftime, French referee Mathieu Raynal refused to award a dominant Fiji scrum in the English 22 and subsequently penalised the Pacific Islanders at a subsequent breakdown. England have definitely got the rub of the green from the officials so far.

England at their best in the first half

Comfortably the best half of rugby England have played at this World Cup. Attacking play looks much sharper, the basics are on point and defence aggressive. Fiji don’t look to have the energy and wherewithal at this deep into the tournament to chase them down.

4src min ENG 21 FIJ 1src

England come in-field off the line-out, and Daly is charged with running hard into the Fijian defence. Tough break.. After a couple of phases, England recycle and move it out wide left to Daly again, who chips in behind dangerously. Fiji corner flag to gather the kick and look to run it back from behind their own line. Alex Mitchell does his utmost to avoid making a tackle, wafting the Fijian player through, but luckily his team-mate makes a better effort. Fiji kick into touch, and the referee blows up for half-time. Goodness me, that was a breathless first half.

38 min ENG 21 FIJ 1src

Fiji keep it narrow and look to bash through England’s defence, but England continue to front up. Ben Earl is proving a menace and gets into a jackal position. Fiji clean him out but do so illegally in the side of the ruck, and England win a penalty. Farrell sends it up-field for a line-out on the Fiji 22.
