The announcement of a potential tripling of the tourist tax in the Ile-de-France region has had the effect of a minor bombshell in the tourism sector. At a time when France is currently in the spotlight with the Rugby World Cup and will be at the forefront of the international tourism scene with the 2024 Olympic Games, is this the right time for such an announcement? As the world’s number one tourist destination in terms of arrivals but only third in terms of revenue, what impact would the increase in this tax have on France’s softpower?
