Eight weeks, 48 games and one winner. The Springboks claimed the glory at the Stade de France on Saturday night, gritting it out through 45 scoreless minutes of the World Cup’s ugliest final to retain their crown and nudge the Rainbow Nation ahead of the All Blacks with four titles.

It was a taut epic that brought out the best and worst of rugby union; yellows and reds, TMO interventions and Bunker Reviews, car-crash collisions and moments of space. With 14 men, New Zealand almost wrote their own history, but no tournament has ever been tighter between the best teams.
