If the Lions’ weekend win over Perpignan proved anything, it was that they are a much better team than they are given credit for.

Since making its last Super Rugby final in 2018, the Joburg franchise has become a byword for failure, with expectations of what they can do dwindling like their stadium attendance numbers with each passing week. Such has their reputation for being a poor team that if you asked anyone for their impressions of the Lions’ early season form in both the United Rugby Championship (URC) and the EPCR Challenge Cup, the answer would be, “same old, same old”.
