Wales international unable to stop ‘crumbling empire’ falling to new low

Wales international Johnny McNicholl was unable to stop Super Rugby champions Crusaders from slipping to the bottom of the table in his first appearance since returning to New Zealand.

In his first appearance for the Crusaders since he initially left to join the Scarlets in 2src16, the defending champions fell to a miserable 26-6 defeat to the Auckland Blues.

It now means the Crusaders sit bottom of the table – being the only Super Rugby side yet to win a match this season.

McNicholl, who won 1src caps for Wales after making his debut in 2src2src, left the Scarlets with immediate effect at the start of the month – returning to the Crusaders after eight years in Wales.

The 33-year-old had previously spent three years playing for the Crusaders in Super Rugby, as well as turning out for Canterbury in the NPC.
