Beauden Barrett paid a touching tribute to fellow All Blacks centurion Sam Cane after their Rugby Championship victory over the Wallabies.
The 32-year-old reached the milestone during New Zealand’s 33-13 triumph over Australia at Sky Stadium in Wellington on Saturday.
It was a particularly poignant occasion for Cane, who was playing his final international match on New Zealand soil.
Departing for Japan
This year will be the flanker’s last in Test rugby having signed a long-term deal with Japanese outfit Tokyo Sungoliath from 2025 onwards.
The All Blacks held a presentation on the field to celebrate Cane’s achievement with Barrett given the honour of handing the back-rower his 100th cap.
“It’s an honour and a privilege for me to present Sammy Cane with his 100th Test cap tonight. I’ve been privileged to be on the journey with you,” the playmaker said.
“I’ve seen what goes on behind closed doors on and off the field, you pour everything into this jersey mate, you’re one hell of a leader, one hell of a bloke and a great player.
“You epitomise what courage means to be an All Black having been through the setbacks, such as a broken neck. Coming back and putting your head in dark places like you do, it’s truly inspirational.
“The least we could have done tonight is restore some pride in Wellington.”

Cane and Barrett came through the system together and played for the same New Zealand U20 side, while they also made their full Test debuts during the Ireland series in June 2012.

“Thank you everyone for sticking around for the presentation, it means a lot,” the openside said.
“I just feel incredibly lucky and privileged for what rugby as a whole and what the All Blacks have been able to give me over the years.
“I want to acknowledge everyone who’s been a part of my journey; all the coaches, the staff, all the wonderful players and friends that I’ve made along the way. It’s what makes rugby so special.
“I want to thank the Wallabies for a heck of a tough Test match, you guys beat me on my 50th so it was nice to get this one on the hundred.
“It just means a heck of a lot, I take a lot of pride in representing my country and pulling on this jersey.
“This whole week’s been special so everyone who’s been a part of it – not just today but the whole way – thank you so much.”
