Becca Mehigan has said that she’s ‘forever proud’ of her husband Dave Kearney after he called time on his professional rugby career.
The former Leinster and Ireland winger confirmed his retirement from the sport last week, having spent the final season of his career playing for the Chicago Hounds in Major League Rugby.
The 35-year-old moved his life to the States at the beginning of this year after signing with the Chicago Hounds for the 2024 Major League Rugby season, taking his wife Becca and their dog Kali along with him.
Reflecting on his sporting career in an Instagram post, Dave wrote: “And just like that, the dream is over!! The time has come to hang up my boots. Thanks to everyone for their support over the last 15 years, my family + friends, my teammates and all the supporters, it’s been an incredible journey, one that I’m really grateful for.
“Thank you to the @chicagohoundsrugby for an amazing opportunity to come and play, it’s been an unreal experience, one I’ll cherish forever. I’ve met some great people here, players and staff. I look forward to watching this club grow over the coming years. Looking forward to the next chapter.”
The Louth man’s comment section was flooded with sweet messages, including one from his wife, who wrote: “Forever proud. Onto the next dream”.
The couple announced back in August that they were expecting their first child together – a year after tying the knot.
Becca took to Instagram to share a photo of herself and her husband at a Chicago Cubs baseball game as they held up a children’s jersey with delight.
She also confirmed that she was halfway through her pregnancy as she posted a series of other photos showing off her bump in the Windy City.
“Halfway to meeting our little Chicago Cub,” she captioned the post.
The couple got hitched at the Civil Registry Office in Dublin last May before throwing a small bash in Portugal surrounded by family and friends.
Dave’s brother Rob and his wife Jess were among the star-studded guestlist at the destination wedding, while podcast star Georgie Crawford and social media influencer Niamh Cullen also flew over from Ireland to celebrate their nuptials.
Yoga teacher Becca stunned in a strapless satin gown and dramatic veil on her big day, while her other half looked dapper in a beige suit and white shirt.
