‘AN HONOUR, a pleasure and a privilege’ was how school leaders at Rugby Free Secondary School (RFSS) described a recent visit from a Government minister.

Early Education Minster Stephen Morgan was joined by Rugby MP John Slinger and other members of the Department for Education in a visit to the Anderson Avenue school.

The visit was due to the school’s status as one of the Department’s featured schools across the country, because of ‘rapid and sustained’ progress which has led to its best ever GCSE and A Level results, and improved attendance figures.

On arrival, the MPs and their colleagues were welcomed by the school’s Student Leadership Team while being serenaded by the choir, who sang Oasis’ ‘Half the World Away’ and Bon Jovi’s ‘Livin’ on a Prayer’.

They spoke with school and Trust leaders, parents and carers, students and staff during the visit – discussing matters including the current educational landscape, the school’s learning practices, research-led initiatives, enrichment and extra-curricular clubs, and encouraging students to build cultural capital and character.

Headteacher Iain Green said: “This visit created a real buzz of excitement around the school, and we are all extremely pleased with how it went.

“I’d like to say a public ‘well done’ to our students, who represent the school so well, so often. Our student leaders and our choir were small reflections of the great and the good at RFSS.

“A visit of this nature does not happen often, and I am extremely proud of our students, staff, parents and carers, and external partners, who have all worked together to make this happen.”

RFSS will again be in the national spotlight later this month, having been confirmed as one of the guest speakers at the ResearchEd conference where staff will speak about the school’s work to eradicate the disadvantaged gap give students the best possible life chances.
