The former directors of the now-defunct Melbourne Rebels are suing Rugby Australia over allegations it breached funding obligations and oppressed the club by failing to pay employment liabilities when it couldn’t.
Documents filed to the Federal Court on Wednesday also allege that Rugby Australia encouraged the Melbourne Rugby Union to continue to trade despite knowing about its debts and refused to “properly” consider a proposal by former Qantas chairman Leigh Clifford to salvage the club.
