RUGBY — Several sporting events were canceled or modified last weekend due to the severe winds that occurred.

The WDA Boys Tennis moved indoors with the championships for singles and doubles in individual play. The Dickinson at Williston boys soccer match was canceled. The Minot Invite cross country event was canceled.

Rugby held on to the 30th Annual Rugby Invitational, which was not canceled.

There were 28 boys varsity teams and 22 girls varsity teams at the event, despite the crazy winds. There were 136 boys and 136 girls who fought the conditions in addition to the fellow competitors at the 5,000K race. The times were affected, but the races continued.

The Hillsboro/Central Valley girls team posted the overall low score for the win at 37 points while the Devils Lake boys posted a 69 for the win.

Killdeer was second in both categories with 55 points for the girls and 85 points for the boys. Rugby posted third place finishes in both lists as well with 85 points for the girls and 95 for the boys.

The girls varsity race was ruled by youth in the ranks. Claire Grinde, a seventh grader from Hillsboro/Central Valley, won the girls race with a time of 19:51.65 while another seventh grader from Killdeer, Summer Olson, was second with a 20:22.40 time.

Rugby junior Hannah Senechal was third with a 20:24.65 time while fellow junior Addie Miller from Killdeer was fourth at 20:33.55 for the race. Devils Lake eighth grader Riley Schmiess claimed fifth with a 20:36.93 time.

The best time for the boys was posted by Bishop Ryan freshman Gryphen Leier-Wangler at 17:31.60 to continue the youth movement at the top. Hillsboro/Central Valley junior was second for the boys with a 17:33.89 that was as close to a photo finish as can be in a cross country race.

Devils Lake sophomore Zane Bennett was nearly 10 seconds slower at 17:43.53 for third while Killdeer senior Jekori Dahlen was fourth at 17:49.87 mark. Rugby sophomore Braydon Green rounded out the top five for the boys with a 17:55.25 time.

The teams are all prepping for the 2024 North Dakota High School Activities Association Cross Country State Meet that will be held Oct. 25 (Class B races) and Oct. 26 (Class A races) at Jamestown’s Parkhurst Campground/Pipestem Reservoir located in Jamestown.
