Young Enniscorthy rugby players rub shoulders with their Leinster idols on tour to Italy

The talented young players were flying to Italy to play their Benetton Rugby counterparts in a friendly game in La Ghirada.

A spokesperson from the club said the professional players were more than obliging to sign the young team’s balls and jerseys before taking a number of photos to commemorate the day. They also chatted away to the boys, answering their burning questions while they waited for the flight.

The fun did not stop even after they landed in Italy on Friday night, as the group came across match referee Craig Evans.

“They had a few words with him, making sure he knew they’d be watching his closely,” they said.

On the Saturday, the team had a fantastic time in their friendly match, with Stuart Gethings making a special presentation to Benetton on behalf of the travelling party and the club.

The team backed up their statement to referee Evans by attending the match between Leinster and Benetton later that day. They acted as mascots on the day, waving the players onto the field and the experience was made all the more sweeter by the Leinster teams win 35-5.

The boys indelible support was even acknowledged by Leinster head coach Leo Cullen and Leinster Captain Caelan Doris.

“The weekend was a great success and something we are sure all the boys will remember when they are playing senior rugby. The boys represented the club and their families fantastically,” the club said.

“Touring is a big part of rugby and this will surely be the first of many tours for the boys in their rugby careers,” they added.

Wexford’s own Tadhg Furlong got in on the pictures.

JWT Travel, the Dublin travel company that organised the Enniscorthy club’s trip, said they were delighted to play a part in the team’s unforgettable experience.

“We were delighted to have organised travel arrangements for the young rugby talents on a memorable trip to Treviso with the Leinster Rugby team. A huge thank you to everyone involved, especially the Leinster Rugby team, an inspiration for these rugby stars of the future!” they said.

Members of the community took to social media to commend the club for creating lasting memories for the impressionable youngsters.

One user wrote: “what an amazing weekend for these young Enniscorthy players. Trip of a lifetime, looks like they had a fantastic time.”

Another said: “that is brilliant. What a great experience for them all.”
