Former out-half Sexton praised Ireland boss Andy Farrell’s son Owen for being a remarkable player.

The out-half duo played on the 2017 British and Irish Lions Tour of New Zealand together.

And the St. Mary’s icon claims Farrell is right up there as one of the best tens to ever have played the game before hailing the 33-year-old Racing 92 ace.

He said: “Who do you want in there when the going gets tough?

“Test-match animals. I know who the media would want. Finn Russell, Marcus Smith… Marcus, I think, is a generational talent.

“He looks flashy, but I think he manages the game really well. I think he can light up a game. But for me, I’d like Owen. He can do some remarkable things.

“If Owen Farrell were Irish, he’d be considered the greatest player that we’ve had. An amazing competitor.

The former England skipper Farrell ruled himself out of the Guinness Six Nations in 2024 for mental wellbeing reasons.

And with him joining Racing 92, he is ineligible for international selection by the RFU.

The Leinster legend added: “But for some reason he just didn’t get that [respect]. He’s one of the best team-mates I’ve ever had.

Johnny Sexton and Jonathan Ross send messages of support to Axel Horgan

“He’s one of the best players I’ve ever played with.

“It’s tough to see him not playing international rugby. He’s someone that should be playing international rugby still and captaining England.

“I have nothing but admiration for him. When you know him as a person, you see the real Owen Farrell.”
