Simon Zebo is renowned for his rugby abilities, including that impressive Zebo kick, but what you may not have known is that he has a surprising talent off the pitch.

Speaking to EVOKE at the launch of Alpro’s new pop-up café on D’Olier Street, the dad-of-four admitted that he enjoys wielding a mic and performing on stage.

Simon told us his brother-in-law is part of Limerick band Hermitage Green and as a hobby he sings and raps with them.

Simon said: ‘I do a little bit with them like as a hobby, I suppose, just messing around; singing, rapping. Just for a bit of fun as a hobby.’

The former rugby player has performed with Hermitage Green at Kaleidoscope Festival and has also performed with them at squad events, birthday parties and weddings. How do we book him?

The sportsman hung up his boots and retired from professional rugby in May, and now that he has a bit of time to spare he’s also putting some energy into working on his golf swing.

‘I like to golf, the odd time,’ he admitted. ‘Now that I have time. It’s good on the body as well, it’s not too strenuous.’

Simon is also planning to flex his business muscles now that he’s retired from professional rugby, and is launching Black Emerald Irish Whiskey in March 2025.

‘Whiskey in particular is love of mine,’ he said, before joking: ‘Not that I’ve been drinking it heavily throughout my career or anything, but since I was a child, my dad’s had an affinity for whiskey.’

Simon revealed his dad and his late best friend were featured on Nationwide back in the late 90s for having the largest single malt whiskey collection in Ireland. Impressive!

The dad-of-four also wants to add another string to his bow and is planning on opening a café in Co Cork with his business partner in the New Year.

Who knows, Simon might even follow in his fellow Irish rugby stars Donncha O’Callaghan and Tommy Bowe’s footsteps and launch a podcast in the future. Watch this space!
