THE CARIBS Rugby Club men’s team have made a clean sweep of the national 15’s titles, winning the Trinidad and Tobago Rugby Union’s (TTRU) 2004 Men’s Championship Division League, the Knockout title and the Bruno Brown Cup.
The bridesmaids each time were Northern Rugby Football Club, second-placed finishers in all three competitions.
Caribs completed their ten-match Championship Division series with 27 points, having lost their first two matches to Northern (22 points) and third placed Defence Force (22) points. But after the poor start, Caribs were able to rack up five straight wins before losing their final match to Royalians.
Caribs also defeated Northern 22-17 in the Knockout final for the Marcus Minshall trophy and also beat Northern 27-12 in the Bruno Browne final.
Local rugby action has now switched to the sevens format, where Caribs were again winners in the inaugural Suki Sevens last weekend, with Anderson Joseph being named MVP.
San Juan Rugby Football Club won the Under-20 Women’s division with Kalena Burke as the MVP. The Under-20 Men’s division was won by Exiles, while Adriano Baptiste was named MVP, and Defence Force won the Senior Women competition, with Leah Kintiba being named MVP.
Action continued with yesterday’s Silvos Sevens at the Lumsdem Recreation ground. This will be followed by the Defence Force Sevens from November 2-3; the Police Sevens (November 9-10) and the Carib Sevens (Nov 16-17).
Sevens action takes an international flavour from November 23-24 with the staging of the Rugby Americas North (RAN) Sevens at the Larry Gomes Stadium, Arima. The event will feature international nations against Trinidad and Tobago’s senior men’s and women’s national teams. The season ends with international club action at the Harvard International Sevens on the weekend of November 30-December 1.
