Volunteers gear up to celebrate 70 years of Rugby’s hospital charity

VOLUNTEERS are gearing up to celebrate 70 years of helping out and fund-raising for the Hospital of St Cross.

The Friends of St Cross will celebrate its Platinum Anniversary next year – and has already launched its fund-raising Platinum Appeal.

At the charity’s recent AGM, Chair Doug Jones was delighted to accept a £500 donation from the Rugby Male Voice Choir as the first contribution to the anniversary appeal.

Choir Chairman David Mayes said: “The choir has a proud tradition of supporting local charities and was delighted to pass on the proceeds of their 80th Anniversary concert to two local charities: the Friends of St Cross and Hope 4.

“The Choir would be pleased to support any future events organised by the Friends.”

Friends President Willy Goldschmidt said: “Everyone associated with the Friends is looking forward to celebrating our 70th year in style.

“We are in the early stages of discussions about how we can support the development of new services at St Cross and, in particular, the exciting planned development of a new ward and theatre complex on the site – subject to planning permission.

“We hope to announce, in the next few weeks, a key project which will be the subject of our Platinum Anniversary Appeal.

“Since 1955, The Friends have spent over £4million donating equipment – which has included supporting every major development in the last 10 years, including the transformation of Blood Taking Services, the creation of the Maple, Laurel, Fern and Endoscopy Units and the Rugby Ambulatory Operating Service which was key to the Hospital being accredited as an Elective Surgery Hub for Coventry and Warwickshire.”

Sue Noyes, recently appointed Chair of University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust, was present at the AGM and said: “I want to thank the Friends for giving me the chance to say my sincere appreciation of all the commitment and good cheer that the St Cross volunteers bring to our patients, their families, and our staff.

“I look forward to working with them in the future.”
