Ireland and Munster star announces shock retirement from rugby


IRELAND winger Eimear Considine has confirmed her retirement from the game.

She earned 30 caps for Ireland after only returning to the international fold earlier this year after a two-year hiatus.

The Clare native’s last game for he country came after 26-14 win against USA in October.

Considine played at full-back and wing during here career after her time in Gaelic football and camogie.

She represented the Banner before transitioning to rugby at the age of 23.

She made her breakthrough with Ireland Sevens team prior to being called up to the 15-a-side format, earning her first cap for the Ireland women’s rugby union team in 2017.

Considine togged out for her club UL Bohemians and Munster, contributing significantly to both.

She stepped away from rugby in the second half of 2022 ahead of the birth of her son Caolán in January 2023.

The utility-back returned three months later but suffered a devastating ACL injury in that year’s interprovincial championship, that kept her on the sidelines for most of that year.

She started all three Women’s  WXV campaign but hasn’t been to stay on for another year.

Taking to social media she confirmed the news in a statement this afternoon.

An statement read: “At the age of 23, I was given an opportunity to play rugby. I had no idea back then of the incredible journey that lay ahead,” she said in a statement.

“But now, after 10 years, I feel it’s time that the journey ends.

“To all my coaches throughout the years at Bohs, Munster, and Ireland, thank you for backing me. To all my team-mates, I have made friendships and memories that will last a lifetime.

“To my family, especially Dean, it wouldn’t have been possible without your support and patience!

“To all the supporters, you’ve been there through thick and thin and I look forward to joining you from here on out.”

Munster Rugby also paid tribute to their now former player.

A social media post read: “Wishing Eimear Considine all the best after announcing her retirement from rugby today.

“Congratulations on an amazing career in red and green!”
