The men of Over de Voor Residence at the North-West University (NWU) are united in profound sorrow following the tragic passing of their beloved former resident, Peter-John ‘PJ’ Sauls, who died in a motor accident after attending a colleague’s retirement on 8 November 2024. His death has left a deep void within the tight-knit Over de Voor Residence, and a heartfelt tribute has been shared to honor his life and legacy.

PJ, who joined Over de Voor in 2018, quickly became a cherished member of the residence, known for his infectious passion for rugby and his unwavering dedication both on the field and in the classroom. His remarkable journey at NWU was marked not only by athletic achievement but also by academic excellence. Peers and mentors remember him as a person who embodied hard work, resilience, and loyalty. As a student, PJ stood out on the rugby field, playing for several teams, including the first-year, third, and fourth rugby squads. It wasn’t just his skill as a scrum-half that set him apart, but the spirit and energy he brought to every match.

His teammates fondly recall his infectious enthusiasm, sportsmanship, and the joy he found in playing for his residence. Beyond his athletic pursuits, PJ was deeply committed to his studies. In 2022, he graduated with a degree in Education, achieving cum laude honours—a testament to his diligent work ethic and academic focus. His success was not only a reflection of his intellectual abilities but also of the determination and discipline he brought to every aspect of his life. Sadly, PJ’s life was cut short in a tragic car accident on Voortrekker Road in Oudtshoorn, shortly after attending a rugby farewell.

His aunt, Euphemia Botha, shared that PJ’s last words were, “God, help me.” She explained that before the accident, a pastor had prayed with him, to which PJ responded, “Amen”. In a statement filled with grief, PJ’s brother, Roberto Botha, reflected on his sibling’s remarkable life: “PJ was more than just my brother—he was my best friend. He was a person who always believed in me, and his strength, passion, and heart will never be forgotten. I’m proud of the man he became, and I’ll miss him more than words can say.” David Botha, PJ’s father, also shared a heartfelt message: “As a father, you always hope your child will outlive you, but the pain of losing PJ is unimaginable. He was not only a great son but a role model to so many. The way he lived—dedicated to both his family and his community—was an inspiration to everyone who knew him. Our family is broken, but we find solace in knowing he touched so many lives.”

The Over de Voor Residence community has been left heartbroken by PJ’s untimely passing, but they also express deep gratitude for having known such an exceptional person. His influence extended far beyond the residence walls. Friends, classmates, teammates, educators, and colleagues all speak of his kindness, resilience, and the way he inspired those around him. “PJ was a beacon of hard work, loyalty, and strength,” said a statement from the men of Over de Voor. “He wasn’t just a student or a player; he was a friend, a mentor, and a symbol of what it means to give everything to the people around you. His memory will live on in our hearts forever.” In their tribute, the residents of Over de Voor extended their condolences to PJ’s family, particularly to his daughter and fiancée, assuring them that PJ’s legacy would continue to thrive within the Over de Voor community.

“May you find strength in the love he shared and comfort in knowing how deeply he was admired and respected,” the statement read. The residence shared a verse from Psalm 34:18, “The Lord is close to the broken-hearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit,” as a source of comfort during this time of mourning.
