A match in England’s second-tier rugby union league has been abandoned after the referee was knocked unconscious.

The English Championship rugby match between Hartpury and Ampthill was called off after 28 minutes on Saturday when Alex Thomas was struck in the head by the ball.

Hartpury fly-half Harry Bazalgate performed a clearing kick that went directly into Thomas’s head, knocking him unconscious.

Medical staff administered treatment on the field before Thomas was taken from the field on a stretcher.

“Our thoughts are with Alex for a swift recovery,” Ampthill said in a statement on the club website.

“We appreciate that the decision is disappointing for supporters who have travelled to the game but our priority is for health of the players and match officials.”

Hartpury were leading 14-0 when the fixture was abandoned.
