Gerwyn Price’s 2024 has not gone to plan. Since a crushing third-round defeat to Brendan Dolan in the World Darts Championship one year ago, The Iceman’s form has slipped and fallen off a cliff.

He heads into this year’s renewal seeded 10th and has a league of challenging opponents in his quarter, namely dark horse Wessel Nijman, Joe Cullen, Daryl Gurney, Jonny Clayton, Chris Dobey, and Michael Smith. His opening tie against an impressive Keane Barry also poses a significant threat.

Yet, while many may be writing the Welshman off, he possesses all the tools to compete at the highest level – which have seen him ranked as World No. 1 on three different occasions and lift the world title three years ago. Express Sport takes a look at Price’s life away the oche, from his rugby-playing past to his newfound fortune and rumours of calling it quits.

What is Gerwyn Price’s net worth?

Winning a world title, along with six other major titles comprised of a trio of Grand Slams, a World Grand Prix and two World Series Finals crowns, has amassed Price a small fortune.

Estimates suggest that his net worth stands in the £2-3million range, with him having earned £4,262,000 in total career earnings, according to the PDPA.

These finances have been spent wisely, as it is reported that Price owns various properties in his hometown of Markham, including a fish and chips shop as part of a widening investment portfolio.

When will Gerwyn Price retire?

Price has endured his fair share of controversies over the years, receiving harsh treatment from multiple different crowds and once rocking up on the Ally Pally stage donning ear defenders. He’s dropped out of various events due to playing conditions – and all of these incidents may have contributed to a telling comment made earlier this year.

Often branded as a villain of the sport for his confrontational ways, Price told Online Darts: “When I first started, I was eager, I wanted to win, I wanted to be in everything, and now, I’ve sort of done everything I’ve wanted to do, and I don’t have that urgency anymore.”

These worries for Price’s darting future became louder last month when he failed to qualify for a competition he used to dominate, the Grand Slam. However, a recent social media post has perhaps silenced the suggestions he’ll be retiring any time soon.

Addressing questions on Instagram, Price posted: “I get messages everyday [asking] would I play in the Premier League in 2025. I’d be stupid not to. And having time off over the last few weeks has made me realise that without darts I’m just at home bored. So hopefully yes I’m in. And trust me I’m in a totally different frame of mind to the last few years.”

What was Gerwyn Price’s rugby career?

It has been 10 years since Price put down a rugby ball to focus on throwing darts, and it is a decision that has paid evident dividends.

The Iceman starred as a hooker for Welsh sides Neath and Cross Keys, winning the 2011-12 WRU Challenge Cup with the latter. Rugby league-wise, Price also played for South Wales Scorpions and Blackwood Bulldogs, as well as being capped by Wales Dragonhearts.

A spell at Pro12 title holders Glasgow Warriors also occurred, and Price made a stunning return to the sport earlier this year when he kitted out for a testimonial in March.
