Back in the day come Christmas, and specifically early new year, it was final trial time with the one we all dreaded top of the rugby agenda. The interprovincial championship – three games alternating home and away every year – was over as all eyes and thoughts turned to the (then) Five Nations with the unavoidable endurance that was ‘the trial’ in its way.
Thankfully, that antiquated ritual is long gone. I mention the dreaded selection showdown because that’s what it was, a nightmare for those involved with names and bodies in the ring for that post-Christmas call.
