RUGBY Town surrendered a half-time lead in a 1-1 draw against Loughborough Students.

Valley broke the deadlock courtesy of Harrison Nee’s first-half goal only for Hussein Issa to level for the visitors just past the hour mark at Butlin Road.

And the result means Rugby sit 19th in the Northern Premier League Midlands table, six points from safety in the relegation zone.

The home side twice went close to opening the scoring as Trey Charles and Dan Summerfield both tried their luck.

At the other end, Paul Hathaway denied Josh Strouts with the latter clean through on goal.

Valley took the lead on 24 minutes when Nee volleyed the ball into the net from 10-yards out after Caine Elliott’s corner fell kindly into his path.

After the break, Strouts fired high and wide for the visitors while Loughborough goalkeeper George Baker made a fine save to keep out Charles’ curling effort.

And the teams continued to trade chances when Nee fired wide before Issa opted to pass rather than shoot when well-placed following Tyreace Brown’s poor backpass.

Loughborough eventually drew level on 63 minutes as Issa jinked past two players and fired a low shot into the net from 22-yards out.

Valley almost reclaimed the lead later in the half as Elliott’s first time shot from the edge of the penalty area went the wrong side of the post.

Rugby are next in action against Sporting Khalsa on Saturday, January 18 with kick-off at 3pm at Butlin Road.
