In the Super League season opener overnight, the Leigh Leopards defeated the defending champion Wigan Warriors 1-0.

Leigh playmaker Gareth O’Brien scored the game’s only point via a field goal in Golden point extra time to break the deadlock.

It’s the first time in the Super League’s 29-year history where a 0-0 draw after 80 minutes has been played out.

It was also the first time Leigh have won in Wigan in over 40 years.

Despite the absence of tries, it was an entertaining contest, with both teams relying on scramble defence often.

There was a touch of controversy late in regular time when Wigan outside back Adam Keighran was sent to the sin bin for a dangerous tackle on Leigh’s Lachlan Lam.

That left Wigan down to 12 men for the extra time period.

The Leopards made full use of the advantage, driving down the field with their first possession in Golden point before O’Brien slotted the field goal.

Leigh coach Adrian Lam said it was a “surreal” game to be apart of.

“It’s a bit surreal that we’ve won 1-0 but I’ll take it,” Kam told BBC Radio Manchester.

“When you’ve got so many new players in the group and four or five making their debuts, there was some uncertainty and nervousness about how we were going to play.

“One thing I wanted to see from the group was to see that they were connected together and that they would be resilient – and I got that in abundance.

“I’m really happy. If Wigan had won 1-0, I would have been as happy as I am now because it’s going to take some time to develop this group and I’m looking forward to that journey.”
