IRELAND skipper Caelan Doris sat out training on Friday afternoon ahead of Ireland’s preparations for their Six Nations showdown with Wales.

Interim boss Simon Easterby and his side travel to Cardiff next week for a vital clash as they visitor’s hope to keep alive their Grand Slam hopes.

Ireland captain Caelan Doris sat out of training on Friday for precautionary reasons –

The green machine are also on course for a record-breaking third successive title.

Wales sacked head coach Warren Gatland earlier this week after a 14-game losing streak.

Although there were initial concerns over Caelan Doris’ availability, the back-row star is expected to feature against Wales.

Ireland’s head of athletic performance, Aled Walters, provided an update on the fitness of the squad..

He confirmed that both Mack Hansen and Joe McCarthy are set to return.

But Tadhg Furlong remains a doubt with an long-running calf issue.

He said: “Mack and Joe are training fully, they’re good.

“It’s simply a management piece for Tadhg and Caelan. These weeks are great, you get to manage some guys. Some need a push, some need to be pulled back a little bit.”

“It’s just general. These have been two pretty attritional Test matches, haven’t they?

“The way Caelan plays, you’re going to pick up little bangs and bruises. It’s just that.”

The coach admitted that Ireland will make a decision later next week in realtion to Leinster prop Furlong’s fitness.

He added: “He’s got a bit of work to do,” he said. “But we’d be anticipating that, if he’s not there, he’s close anyway.”

Wales will be led by Cardiff boss Matt Sherratt following Gatland’s mutual departure.

Wales vs Ireland stars 22 February at 2:15pm.
