The Arab Rugby Sevens Championship 2025, held on 14-15 February at the historic Alexandria Stadium in Egypt, marked a significant milestone for rugby in the Arab world and Africa, according to Rugby Africa President, Herbert Mensah.
This year’s tournament, the 10th men’s and 5th women’s edition, featured 12 men’s teams and 7 women’s teams from across the Arab region, showcasing the sport’s growing prominence.
Herbert Mensah who attended the event, highlighted its importance on the African continent and noted the strong African presence, with teams from Libya, Morocco, and Tunisia participating alongside Egypt, which recently achieved full membership in World Rugby.
The tournament received official sanctioning from World Rugby, with Rugby Africa as the recognised governing body.
He said the two-day event in Alexandria provided valuable competition time for African teams, featuring a mix of seasoned players and emerging talent.
He noted that the Saudi Arabian women’s team made history by participating without wearing hijabs, reflecting the sport’s inclusive progress.
Tunisia’s women’s team emerged victorious, demonstrating superior skill, while the men’s competition saw the United Arab Emirates clinch the title, with Morocco delivering commendable performances.
Herbert Mensah emphasised the significance of Egypt’s role in hosting the championship, noting the country’s substantial infrastructure and ambition to host future Olympic Games.
The successful organisation of the tournament, adhering to World Rugby standards—including comprehensive medical protocols and logistical management—shows Egypt’s capability to host international sporting events.
Looking ahead, Herbert Mensah advocated for Egypt to organise quarterly tournaments, fostering regional cooperation among nations such as Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria, and Libya.
This initiative aims to enhance the quality of rugby, provide more competitive opportunities, and position Egypt as a central hub for the sport in the region.
He said the Arab Rugby Sevens Championship 2025 not only celebrated athletic excellence but also symbolised the unifying power of sport, bridging cultural divides and promoting inclusivity across the Arab world and Africa.
