Cambridge Rugby Club have appointed a familiar face as their new head coach.

Former New Zealand international Craig Newby is returning to the role he previously held from 2012-2015.

He succeeds Richie Williams, who left the Championship club in December, and will take up his post on May 1, after he leaves Ealing Trailfinders.

Anthony Allen, a former team-mate of Newby at Leicester, will remain in caretaker charge until then.

Newby, who has also held coaching roles with Wasps, Japan, England under-20s and Ulster, will have the final five games of the season to assess the squad.

“It’s a really positive appointment,” said Cambridge chairman Tim Hague.

“We’re going to build the rest of his support team, so we’re chatting to a few people about that, but the initial appointment is very exciting.

“I think it will give us the cultural shift and transformation in playing fortunes that we need.

“We approached Craig, and a few other people, when the position became vacant.

“We went through an interview process and Craig came out top of that pile, so we’re happy to appoint him.”

Cambridge are bottom of the Championship, winning three of their 12 games, but with the league increasing in size to 14 teams next season, there is no relegation.
