It’s been unclear for a long time if a new Rugby League would come after it was teased by the NRL in 2020 and never mentioned again, but we now know that a new Rugby League game will release later this year.
NRL Ceo Andrew Abdo Went on the Hello Sport podcast and confirmed that a new game would release this year and also confirmed that it would be multiplatform and more online than ever.
“I love games and I’m a big believer in gamification as a way of connecting with winning new fans and existing fans. There’s a new game in the works and it will be multiplatform. It will be much more online and much more contemporary and it will be released this year” said Abdo.
It’s been speculated that Nacon (who owns Big Ant) acquired both the NRL and Super League game licenses, so we’d expect it to be some kind of game that incorporates both codes. It’s highly likely that Big Ant (the developer of the previous Rugby League Live games) will be developing.
CEO of Big Ant, Ross Symons has been seen at several NRL games around the world such as the opening games in Vegas over the weekend.

If there was any further doubt, he’s also been replying to multiple fans with a little winking face and little nods almost confirming that Big Ant are the developers which I personally think is good news given they’ve put work into all the games so far and have that pedigree there.
I know, crazy, right? 😉

Rugby League Live 4 released in 2017. We gave it an 8/10 and said: “Rugby League Live 4 is a step in the right direction. There’s a level of polish that we haven’t seen in an Australian sporting game in some time and whilst there’s still some A.I issues, I never felt that they changed the result of the game. Attack is more realistic, which can lead to frustration when trying to get over the line, but the game rewards you for spending time with it and learning the new offensive/defensive mechanics. If you liked the last game, there’s no reason why you won’t like this one even more. The PS4 version of this game was played for the purpose of this review.”
