RUGBY, N.D. (KMOT) – Rugby High School students took home the traveling trophy at one of the most competitive and well-known contests in North Dakota’s FFA Chapter.

The State Parliamentary Procedure contest evaluated the student’s ability to formally conduct a meeting using parliamentary procedure.

The Rugby FFA Chapter gained strong public speaking and teamwork skills on their way to winning the trophy.

Many of the high schoolers in the chapter have been preparing for the State Parli-Pro competition since they were in middle school.

“So, to finally just win it and take this trophy home means a lot. I think it can just be really inspiring to younger students to know that this is doable if you put in the work,” said Rugby FFA Treasurer Jaclyn Duchscher.

After a challenging competition against more than 10 different schools, they will soon be off to represent North Dakota at a national level later this fall.

“Kind of like getting in the flow with each definitely strengthens our relationship between our officer team and kind of getting to know each other,” said Rugby FFA Secretary Allison Selensky.

Their advisor and coach Kristi Tonnessen said their key asset was teamwork.

“For me, this is the first time that I’ve coached a State Parli-Pro team. It’s a really big accomplishment, but it really depends on our kids, and that’s the most important part,” said Tonnessen.

Tonnessen said the last time Rugby won the title was about a decade ago.

She said they’ve always finished near the top each year but never got their hands on the trophy until this moment.

“You know everything about everybody else. We make sure to bring each other up instead of bring each other down,” said Rugby FFA President Katelyn Mattern.

They will go against up to about 50 different teams in October.

In the time before their national competition, the students are working on their biggest fundraiser of the year: the alumni banquet which will be next month.
