Rugby fans urged to be on alert after fatal botulism outbreak in Bordeaux

An Irish rugby fan is being treated for a suspected case of Botulism in an intensive care unit in a Spanish hospital, according to the Irish Times.

The rugby fan had attended Ireland’s World Cup match against Romania in Bordeaux last Saturday, September 9. However, they are now being treated for botulism in an intensive care unit, the newspaper reported.

The person’s family have appealed for Irish fans returning from Bordeaux to be warned of the symptoms of the potentially life-threatening illness.

Meanwhile health authorities in the Bordeaux region, ARS Sante, have confirmed there are now 12 identified cases linked to the same outbreak.

The outbreak centred on home-preserved canned sardines served at the Tschin Tschin Wine Bar as part of tapas food presentations.

They said the bar is very popular with customers from abroad.
